Covenant Debate Society

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Blake Bozarth, a junior at Covenant, recently founded and is president of the Debate Society at Covenant. I thought I would share it with you avid and aspiring intellectuals who enjoy a good debate. Here is a little information about their recent successes in the tournament The Patrick Henry Communicator Classic from the Covenant website.

Two Covenant students finished in the top five overall as the newly formed Covenant College Debate Society competed in its first tournament, The Patrick Henry Communicator Classic, at Patrick Henry College on January 24, 2009.  As part of the National Forensics Association (NFA), the tournament hosted 33 students from four schools, including Covenant and North Carolina State. Covenant’s young Debate Society made an impressive showing. Zach Robbins ‘12 finished in third place overall and captured the first place speaker award. Blake Bozarth ‘10 finished in fifth place overall and earned the second place speaker award. Along with Robbins and Bozarth, four other Debate Society members competed: Hannah Vanbiber ‘11, John Rogers ‘09, Ali Morgan ‘11, and Rosemary Shelden ‘12.  Vanbiber received the thirteenth place speaker award. Ice Day

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Classes were canceled all day today due to freezing rain. I woke up around 9:30 this morning, and checked my emails and heard that there were no classes… I looked outside in disbelief. We had about 2 inches of snow a couple days ago and only got classes canceled until 10:00 a.m. Today there is NO snow… just a thin layer of ice over campus. It doesn’t take a lot to cancel school on the mountain.

But hey, I’m not complaining. I only had one class today anyway, so it doesn’t really affect me… but admittedly, it’s nice to not have Finite Math today.

Thanksgiving Break

Friday, November 16th, 2007

Thanksgiving Break, here I come… I finished my statistics exam this morning – my last pre-Thanksgiving exam. It feels so good to know that it’s Friday afternoon and that I’ll be home in less than a week. I’m so excited to have a break from classes and having to follow a schedule and having to follow due dates… it’s going to be amazing to sit at home, spend time with my family, eat good food, watch good movies, hang out with my brother and sister-in-law in Nashville, read, and just have a change in scenery.

I would ask you to pray for the continual construction going on in the BUILD campaign, and particularly in building the new academic hall across from Carter Hall. It is going up fast, and they’ve been working on putting the roofing up at the moment. It’s easy to walk by it and not realize the huge amounts of planning, work, and stress going into getting the building up by the spring. Just pray that things would run smoothly, and that the overseers and workers would have the wisdom and knowledge needed. “I can’t wait until it’s finished” is a statement that my friends are tired of hearing me say…

Scots Go To Nationals

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Our own beloved Scots are currently in Kansas City for Nationals.

Scots

The #25-ranked Covenant College men’s soccer team defeated Milligan College 3-0 on November 3 in the NAIA Region XII tournament. With this win, the Covenant Scots earned the first spot in the NAIA national tournament, to be held November 14-20 in Olathe, Kansas.

Covenant midfielder Jake Warren has been named to the NAIA Region XII All-Region team.

The Scots are 15-4-1 for the season, and won the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season championship before winning the Region XII championship. Covenant will take on MidAmerica Nazarene (KS) in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday, November 14, at 7:30 p.m. CST/8:30 p.m. EST.

For those of you who are on campus, the Scots game against MidAmerica Nazarene (KS) will be shown live on a big screen in Sanderson 215 at 8:30 p.m. tonight. If you can’t be in Kansas City, at least come and watch them on campus - help us cheer the Scots on.

Liberian Bible Project

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Several Covenant students and faculty are taking part in the Liberian Bible Project… a project that desires to send study Bibles to the recently war-torn country of Liberia to re-establish Bible training. Here is what they have to say:

We’re trying to send about 200 study Bibles, hopefully Reformation Study Bibles, to Liberia, West Africa. Liberia suffered from fifteen years of war and the church is trying to re-establish Bible training. In addition, I’d like to send English Bibles (paperback ESV’s) and other materials, as possible. The Bible’s will be going to Buchanan, Liberia, which is the second-largest city in the country. This is an effort partnered with Jesus Evangelism Ministries, which is an national ministry to equip pastors and church leaders. The director, Rev. Benjamin Munford, is a graduate of African Bible College and is currently a distance student with the Covenant College Chalmers Center.
We need about $1200 for the Bibles, $200 for postage, $150 for gas, and $250 for shipping. $1800 total.

All cheques for this project can be made about to “Highlands Church” with “Liberian Bible Project” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to Highlands or given to Enoch Elwell or Justin Richards.

President Nielson

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Along with the chapel blog, President Nielson started his own little journal of the Covenant happenings. President Nielson states his purpose for beginning the blog,

This blog is a place where I will write every other week on various topics of interest to the wider Covenant College community. One of the joyful burdens of my role is to keep up with daily events, educational news, social and economic trends, cultural and global developments, and theological and church issues. I regularly read journals, books, and news outlets covering a broad range of contexts, and have the opportunity to hear from thoughtful and knowledgeable people. In this blog I will offer my ruminations for your consideration, and I hope that you will comment if you have something to add to the discussion.

His most recent post was on the visit of the Most Reverend Henry Luke Orombi, the Archbishop of Uganda who came to Covenant College to speak at the Neal Conference. To find out a little more about President Nielson himself, you can read his biography.
