Ice Storm and Pancake Pandemonium for Haiti

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

Chapel yesterday consisted of an incredible talk given by Dr. Ward, followed by Chaplain Messner giving the announcement that the college would be officially closed at 11:45 a.m. due to the incoming snow/ice storm. Amazing. It started snowing around 12:00 p.m. and didn’t stop until well into the evening. Last night, everything froze over with about an inch or so of ice. The trees are covered with ice, and all students have been confined to campus for the next 24 hours.

It’s been a lot of fun. I spent a lot of yesterday and this morning taking pictures.. some of which will soon hopefully make it onto here. This morning, Mac hosted a pancake breakfast for any students on campus to raise money for Haiti. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the RAs flipped pancakes – plain, banana, blueberry, chocolate chip, and whole wheat. I took over one of the RA’s positions for an hour or so. It was fun, and a lot of the students from campus came down to have pancakes and hang out. Pray for Haiti. I don’t know how much money we raised, but they need prayer. Tabitha Kapic was recently appointed the National Director of Medair, and they have been doing some great work down in Haiti. If anyone is looking for ways to donate money or time, let me know and I can point you in her direction.

BUILD at Covenant

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

A few people have been asking me about the new dorm, as well as the building projects that are going on right now at Covenant.

I wrote a little bit about the new dorm progress that is happening, but I thought I would refer you to the actual Covenant website that has a lot more specific details and information about the BUILD campaign at Covenant. There are a number of various building projects that are either currently happening or in the plans – from renovating Carter Hall, to building a new academic building across from Carter Hall (in between the Chapel and Probasco), to building a new residence hall, to constructing a new circle on the north side of campus…

There is a lot of awesome change going on, and I want people to be able to hear it from the people who know what they’re talking about.

I encourage you all to pray for Covenant through this time. Not everyone agrees with the new projects – saying that money should be focused elsewhere. I’m not a voice of knowledge on that subject, but I do know that we have a responsibility to pray with and for our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. And those at Covenant are only a small part of that body of believers.

Dorm Life

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Someone asked me to describe what dorm life at Covenant is like. I’m sorry I’m a little late in actually writing a post about it… it’s been a busy couple of weeks as I have been wrapping up the semester with papers and exams.

So what are the dorms like? What is dorm life like? Where to begin…

I guess I’ll start with the fact that a new residence hall is currently under construction. It is actually being built where Blood Field (the old parking lot) used to stand, right next to Maclellan Hall. I can’t remember exactly when they started, but the actual construction only started around Christmas. It’s April now, and the entire structure has been put up. They’re beginning to work on putting up dry wall, stone, and the roof (as of two or three days ago). It’s pretty exciting! If everything goes to plan, people will be moving in the new dorm (which is yet to be named) by the fall semester of 2007.

As for the rest of campus, for those of you who don’t know, there are three residence halls. Carter Hall is the oldest one. It actually used to be the old hotel building before Covenant was founded in 1955. Though I have never actually lived in it before, i’ve been told that it has a lot of character. There are a lot of really awesome halls – namely, 2nd South and 2nd Central (but hey, i’m just biased :). Before I moved to the Five Points (in Maclellan), I was going to be on either 2nd South or 2nd Central. Click to continue »

New Residence Hall

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

The new residence hall is going up fast and furiously… they’re almost done with the steel structure, and they’re starting to put up drywall. It’s going to be done and ready to go by the time the fall semester of 2007 rolls around. It’ll be interesting to see how things will change on campus…

Mystery Date with 3rd North

Monday, February 19th, 2007

So it’s totally Monday afternoon right now, and I am totally going to write about what I did on Saturday night… because it’s Monday, and all I have done that is noteworthy is go to my usually classes.

But Saturday night? Now, that’s a different story… read on, my friends.

It all starts back about a week or two ago. It was any ordinary day in which I was heading to the mail room to check my mail. I opened up my box and pulled out a letter addressed to me. I knew it wasn’t personal – first off, they mispelled my name, and second, it was printed. I mean, come on? Who prints you a letter? Click to continue »

Assassins Has Begun..

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

Covenant has this thing they do every year called “Assassins.” It’s essentially a game to see who can stay alive longest and who can get the most kills… anyone who wants to play the all campus game submits their name. Once all the names are in, you are given a piece of paper that has the name of someone else on it. That person is who you have to find and “kill” with a water pistol… The thing is, you don’t know who has you, so everyone is always suspicious and on their guard. The last man standing wins a $25 prize, and the man with the most kills gets $20. Click to continue »

Prayer Vigil on Highlands

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Today was a Day of Prayer for Covenant College. We didn’t have classes, but instead set aside one day to pray. It’s been really awesome… not to mention not having classes and just having the opportunity to take some time to rest and catch up on sleep or studying.

Maclellan Hall, the residence hall that I am in, had an all-night prayer vigil. They had set different times slots throughout the night from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for different halls in Maclellan to pray. Obviously, it was just an opportunity to spend time in prayer… and to spend time singing, as well as just talking and having fellowship with people on campus.

Thank you God for talks and guitar jam sessions with your RA…. what a blessing.

A continutation… The Five Points

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

So I started writing some about my hall, The Five Points, on my last post… but I decided to actually grab the opportunity to spend time with my roommates and hallmates while they praised and worshiped, instead of writing. So I just wanted to kind of continue on from where I left off.

Each building at Covenant is divided into different guy’s and girl’s halls. My hall is the Five Points. It’s on the second floor of Maclellan. And I pretty much love everything about it. The halls at Covenant are really important to the people that live on them… and every hall has its own theme and unity. My hall, the Five Points, has more of an older theme…. the walls are covered in black and white posters and records of Elvis Presley and numerous other old musicians and famous people. But hey, enough of that. That’s just to give you an idea of what the hall looks like….

But what really makes Five Points what it is are the guys that live on it – and for me, those who I feel privileged to call my brothers in Christ. Last night was only one in many examples I could give of amazing times I have had with my hallmates and especially my roommates. After playing worship music last night, a bunch of the guys, as well as a few girls from the other Mac halls, came into our room and just started talking… our room is one of the bigger six-person suites, so there is plenty of room. After a while, there were a good 10 or 15 people just sitting on the floor or on chairs just talking and fellowshipping with one another. It was awesome. We talked about anything and everything - church denominations, school, past experiences…. what a blessing to just have fellowship with friends and brothers and sisters in Christ.
