Underworld: The Rise of the Lycans

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

I’ve never really liked or appreciated movies about vampires and werewolves. Not sure why.. something about the usual character and theme of the vast majority of those movies is just morbid and dark. Nothing good ever really seems to happen. The usual theme is just a blood feud between the two fictional species.

However, I went to see Underworld – The Rise of the Lycans – with two of my guys last night, and I have to admit… it was phenomenal. I’d recommend it to most anyone who enjoys and appreciates awesome cinematography, a great story line, and fictional movies. The Rise of the Lycans is the 3rd Underworld to come out, but is esentially the prequel to the first two and tells of the history behind the vampires and the lycans (werewolves). There is one scene that I would advise against watching.. and the film is R-rated. But aside from that, it’s a great movie. I would put it up there on the same level with Lord of the Rings.. with a possible touch of Gladiator.

Siberian Husky Anyone?

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Anyone want to give away a Siberian Husky? I’m in the market for one. Someday, when I have my own place, I’m going to get one with black and white fur and deep blue eyes. Something similiar to this beauty..

RA Interview

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I’ve got my final RA interview this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. I’m a little nervous. I have to dress up and essentially get “grilled” by all the RD’s and Emily Ford, the Director of Student Development. Get excited! Prayer would be appreciated.. that I would be able to be honest and open with my responses, as well as for peace and clarity in knowing what God wants for me as far as that is concerned.

Summer job searches and filling out applications are definitely still near the top of my “to do” list. I think I’m working on three different applications right now, as well as getting references and recommendations.. and having a few phone interviews.

Food for Thought

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

My dad passed these words on to me this morning. I thought I’d share them.

I love the way Eugene Peterson expresses things… “The whole law is fulfilled in one word, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” Gal. 5:14

“The whole law is fulfilled,” says Paul, “through love.” Grammatically, the word fulfilled is in the prefect tense. As such it means the whole law has been fulfilled every time one person loves another as himself. To love my neighbors as less than myself is to treat them as a means to my ends.”  (A sobering thought…)

E&Y

Friday, February 20th, 2009

I’m working on an application right now to get in to Ernst and Young’s Summer Leadership Program. It’s basically a weekend-long program where you can get to know the company, as well as learn how to be more of a leader in that particular field. I’m hoping and praying that I get accepted. E&Y primarily chooses their interns from the people that are accepted into the Summer Leadership Program… and if I get into an internship, hopefully I’ll be able to work there once I graduate.

It’s somewhat frustrating and disheartening though with the way the economy is right now. I hope and pray that it turns around and begins to get better. A lot of my friends’ parents are beginning to lose their jobs. It’s discouraging.

I’m also applying to a few places for jobs this summer. It doesn’t look like I’ll be able to stay at home though. I haven’t been able to find anything in Franklin. If anyone knows of any summer employment or needs someone to work for them, let me know.

Friday Night

Friday, February 13th, 2009

I’m not quite sure why i’m writing on this on a Friday night.. I had a few minutes, and I thought I’d just get on real quick. I’m about to head out to hang out with some friends. I think we’re going to go build a campfire or something.. and then watch a movie – August Rush, I think? I haven’t seen it before, but according to some of the girls it’s pretty good. I’m not sure if that means it’s a chick flick though. We’ll see.

Tomorrow is going to be pretty chill. I’ll be writing a paper in the morning for my Family class.. maybe painting some for one of my professors.. and then going out to dinner with some friends. It should be fun!

Tests, Jobs, and the Weekend

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

I had my first intermediate accounting 2 test this morning.. it was pretty hard, but I felt like I adequately prepared for it. We’ll see what happens. It’s always hard to tell with Dodson’s tests how well I really do. I’m about to do a little reading for my tax class which is at 2:30, and then after class, i’ll be working out.

I’m still trying to find job opportunities for this summer. It’s looking pretty grim right now. Jobs are pretty much non-existent, especially for a college student just wanting work for the summer. I’m praying.

On a different note – it’s been absolutely beautiful here! It’s definitely starting to feel like spring. I’m pretty excited! I’m ready for this weekend to get here. I’ll be writing a few easy papers (nothing I can’t do with a little help from Jason Mraz, Maroon 5, the Fray’s new album, and the like…), possibly doing some painting for one of my professors, and enjoying a breather! And.. I’m thinking of taking a certain someone down to Toni’s restuarant for diner on Sunday night. Also very exciting. :)

This Little Thing Called Schoolwork..

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

I’ve been reading and studying for intermediate accounting 2 the majority of today so far.. I’ve got a test in there on Thursday. I’m starting to sweat a little. It’s said to be the hardest business and accounting class in the business degree…  And in between studying for that, i’ll also be writing a 6 page paper in response to the question “Is the world really flat?” And then I’ve got a 3 hour business law class tonight. I almost forgot about that one. It’s going to be a GREAT day… :)

Integrity

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

I’ve been thinking a lot about integrity today… and what it actually means. My mom always pushes me and challenges me to live my life with integrity before God and before the people around me… but I confess that I don’t always know what that means. I often do things that are questionable, yet I rationalize and justify them in my mind as being “not that big of a deal.” Have you ever done that? A few of my good friends got turned in for breaking contract and doing some things that were against the administration’s policies and standards. It actually surprised me that they were turned in… when it really shouldn’t have. I knew they were doing things that were against contract, but because I knew them and that they were really good guys, I justified it. It wasn’t a very big deal in my mind.

I was thinking about this morning, and it kind of hit me that that was a lack of understanding and integrity on my part. If I truly understood what integrity is and looks like, then I would and should do everything that I can to uphold the law… God tells us in 1 John 2:3-6:

We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

Someone shared that with me this morning. It was pretty eye-opening… that we don’t truly know Jesus if we do not do everything in our power to walk in integrity and obedience to Him and His Word.

“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity… Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path…”    Proverbs 2:1-9

Covenant Debate Society

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Blake Bozarth, a junior at Covenant, recently founded and is president of the Debate Society at Covenant. I thought I would share it with you avid and aspiring intellectuals who enjoy a good debate. Here is a little information about their recent successes in the tournament The Patrick Henry Communicator Classic from the Covenant website.

Two Covenant students finished in the top five overall as the newly formed Covenant College Debate Society competed in its first tournament, The Patrick Henry Communicator Classic, at Patrick Henry College on January 24, 2009.  As part of the National Forensics Association (NFA), the tournament hosted 33 students from four schools, including Covenant and North Carolina State. Covenant’s young Debate Society made an impressive showing. Zach Robbins ‘12 finished in third place overall and captured the first place speaker award. Blake Bozarth ‘10 finished in fifth place overall and earned the second place speaker award. Along with Robbins and Bozarth, four other Debate Society members competed: Hannah Vanbiber ‘11, John Rogers ‘09, Ali Morgan ‘11, and Rosemary Shelden ‘12.  Vanbiber received the thirteenth place speaker award.
