Discouragement

My voice still hasn’t shown signs of coming back… it’s been almost three weeks since I’ve had full use of it. I talked to my chorale director, and he said it wasn’t normal for it to take this long. He advised me to see a throat specialist soon. This is wearing on me. It’s discouraging having to sit in the back during chorale rehearsel and physically be unable to sing… not knowing when my voice is going to come back. My mom’s worried that I did permanent damage to my vocal chords from the weeks of coughing. The thought never crossed my mind until she said that that it might even be a possibility for that to happen. Please pray that God would restore my voice… I trust God is sovereign in this. I know that He knows what He’s doing, but it’s discouraging being in this place.

We sang “Sanctus” and “My Eternal King” in chorale this morning. They’re two of my favorite songs that we sing, and I came close to losing it when all the baritones busted out in full force. It seems stupid… but singing is one of my passions (whether I’m good at it or not), and it’s been a discouragement to physically be unable to… and to now know that there’s a possibility that my voice won’t go back to normal. I’d appreciate your prayers.

  1. Philip, I will def be praying for you! You know, you’re right, we really should catch up. I have this hunch that we’ve been going through very similar things. Let’s pick a date before school beats us down again =)

  2. Hey Philip,
I’ve been there and know how you feel concerning not being able to sing due to a bad throat. Just a little word of advice..start by drinking CLEAR hot tea (English Breakfast) or just regular Orange Pekoe and add a teaspoon of honey BUT NO LEMON! The acid from the lemon juice will irritate your throat even more. Also, don’t add milk. Back to the tea drinking..drink a cup of tea every hour and use Ricola Cough Drops. The packaging is bright pink and they are Swiss Herb Cough Drops that contain Echinacea and are flavored with Honey-Lemon. I know I sound as though I’m contradicting myself regarding the use of “lemons” but these lozenges are not acidic. They are soothing, so pick up a couple of packages from your Pharmacy. Take one every couple of hours–don’t crunch them, let them dissolve slowly in your mouth. Also, get back to your General Practitioner or Family Doctor. Sounds like you might need a stronger antibiotic or it could be a virus that will just need to run it’s VERY long course. Consider this a bit of a handicap for the next while, so try to talk as little as possible, don’t talk loud or even try to sing. As a fellow Christian, just know that the Lord knows about your disappointment and HE CARES! Give it over to the Lord and ask him to heal you. Take care of yourself, get back to your doctor and remember to DRINK YOUR HOT TEA! :)
