Like a Kid Again
I never thought I would feel quite like a kid again when I came to Covenant. My goals and responsibilites were focused on getting an education in which I could someday find a career and provide for my family. My priorities shifted upwards a few notches as I began to focus primarily on what I came here to do.
But Friday night definitely assured in my mind that whether you’re a middle school kid or a high school kid or a college kid… you’re still a kid. :)
This past week was a really busy and long week. Due dates are starting to come up again, and the real papers of the semester are beginning to show themselves and become slightly more of a reality. I have a philosophy paper for Dr. Davis due this coming Wednesday, not to mention New Testament, CHOW, and PE papers coming up soon too. All in all, it’s been a busy week.
Friday rolled around, and classes came and went. I have to say that one of the best feelings of the entire week is stepping out the door of my New Testament class at 2:50 p.m. on a Friday afternoon and knowing that I don’t have class again until Monday morning. Such a beautiful feeling.
After sorting through some books and papers and trying to figure out what I had to do over the weekend, I called up two of the guys in my small group. I met them in Franklin when we moved last year, so I hung out with them all summer long before coming to Covenant. So I guess you could say these guys were a couple of my pretty close brothers on campus. :)
After grabbing some dinner from the Great Hall, we headed down to Jackson Pond and the fire pit that’s by the pond. If you’ve read any of my other posts, you’ll know I talk a lot about the pond and how it’s pretty much one of my favorite places to go during the week. It’s peaceful, it’s beautiful, and it’s an awesome place to think and journal - not to mention to take pictures. On the way down, we were just talking about how cool it would be to build a fort or some sort of lean-to to camp out in. Part of the path going down to the pond is obstructed by trees that had recently been felled. We decided to pick up some of the thicker branches and carry them down to the fire pit. It took a while… and after two trips, we managed to get a good 15 large and freshly cut branches to the fire pit. We even managed to roll 3 big tree stumps down the path and around the fire.
Long story short, we pretty much are working on building a fort down there… we spent a good three hours down there Friday night setting up the basic structure and layout and tying the branches together with rope. And yes, we’re going down again later today to actually have a fire and to try to finish up more on it. You never know, if it keeps going the way it’s going now, it’ll be able to fit five or six guys in there… we talked about having our small group come down one weekend to camp out there.
We felt like kids again… the whole time we were building it, we just talked and reminisced about other forts and tree houses that we built when we were younger. It was awesome. All in all, just being able to spend a Friday night out with two of my brothers… building a fort, burning a fire, and reading passages from Isaiah and the Psalms was a blessing. Good times…

It’s a totally freeing feeling when you can be a kid for just a few hours…
I think the fort looks really cool. I missed out Friday night, huh? Well, I guess it’s good that I didn’t interrupt any of the male-bonding goin on :)
