“When I Run I Feel God’s Pleasure”

Thank you, God, that’s its Friday… and I can have the chance to enjoy a beautiful weekend! It’s beautiful up on the mountain right now. The sun is starting to set, and all the trees are that bright orangish/yellow color. You know what I mean? It’s amazing. I went for a run a little while ago, after my New Testament class got out (actually, I cleaned our room and bathroom … THEN went for a run. But who’s counting?).

It was so refreshing. I usually don’t like to run. I have never really had very good knees, so if I run a lot they start to ache and are kind of painful. But it was amazing today… I went on the loop that I usually run on - down past the gym, past Scotland Yard, and down the trail that runs behind the apartments. The trail runs through the woods for a while, and then comes out to an opening and one of the many bluffs on Lookout Mountain. I stopped for a breather and just stood on the edge of the cliff overlooking one of Tennessee’s many valleys. I love that place… then I picked up the trail again into the woods. It ran around for a while, and then came up alongside Jackson Pond (now you know why I love that loop so much).

It was really refreshing just being able to run on the soft dirt of the trails, as well as just have time to think and pray and talk out loud. I find that that is when I can have the most honesty with myself.. as well as with God. Being able to just go out in the middle of nowhere on a mountain and just run through the woods is really freeing. There is no one to impress and no one to hear you. I love that.. I love that I can talk freely and openly and out loud to myself… as well as have the freedom to feel like I can talk out loud to God. I know I can any other time of the day (and I do), but there is always that slight feeling that kind of holds you back from praying out loud. You know what I mean? Like when you’re in your room… and you don’t really want anyone else to hear about what you’re praying about or something, so you pray in your head. Don’t get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with that. I do it all that time. But there is something so much more freeing about praying and talking out loud to God. I love that..

  1. That bluff was one of my favorite spots when I was at Covenant. I actually hiked down to the field at the bottom of the mountain. You should try it sometime.

  2. yeah Evan, that would be awesome. I love to just stand on the edge and look at all the trees running down. There are plenty of trails and bluffs and fields around Covenant that I still want to explore while i’m here…

  3. driving in my car by myself with the windows rolled down… that used to be my “talk out loud” time. I miss that… sometimes it’s good to get away for awhile.
