Aimless
Do you ever have those nights where all you want to do is go out and walk aimlessly? Where all you want to do is forget about everything you’re supposed to remember… and just dig up good times from the past? I’m there right now. I just spent the last hour or so walking aimlessly around campus, listening to music and just thinking. This one song really caught my ear. As far as I am aware, it was written by Josh Groban. The words just really meant a lot to me… read them and think about them. I can’t make the claim that they were written by a Christian or that the words were talking about Christ. But whenever I here them, they always remind me of what Christ has done for me… and what He continues to do for me every step of the way. They were an encouragement to me, so I thought I would share.
“You Raise Me Up”
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up… To more than I can be.
You raise me up… To more than I can be.

whoa. That song came on the radio today and even though I hadn’t heard it in awhile, it really made me think about all that Christ has done…interesting that it should be the same song. (Then again, probably thousands of people listened to that song today..but anyway, that fact doesn’t make it less a God thing.)

Just for the record the song was written by Brendan Graham. It has been recorded more than 125 times throughout the world. It was most popularized in the US by Josh and the CCM group Selah.

Philip, do you think that the atmosphere at Covenant is contributing to your depressed attitude? As far as I know, Covenant is a great school. Still, I can imagine that being up on a mountain could put you in restless moods like that, especially with all the fog I saw on Scholarship Weekend. So, I’m wondering if you go on walks because you don’t feel that there is anyone you can talk to about your restlessness. However, I’m still very interested in Covenant. Of course, being prone to depression, this post concerns me a little about the support I might get at Covenant. Let me know what you think? Ever yours, Steve.

hey Steve, I know what you mean. It is sometimes easy to get down when it’s cold outside and the fog is engulfing the campus. But one thing I have been reminding myself of is that it is part of God’s creation, just as is the sun and the blue sky. Why shouldn’t I be happy or upbeat when it’s raining outside? Just like I am when it’s sunny outside?
I know…it’s easier said than done. Covenant is pretty well known for it’s fog. There are days when you’ll just see it rolling over the tops of the residence halls.
But I think you will find that every college or university that you look at will have its downsides. Some people think that the fog is depressing… personally, for me, it’s hard sometimes. But there are plenty of people who love walking up towards the dining hall in the morning and just having the fog roll in and around the buildings.
I guess I would just encourage you not to turn down a college because of the fog that sometimes visits the college. :) I’m not making a sales pitch - but I know from my experiences here, that the brothers and sisters in Christ that God has brought to me have FAR outweighed what the weather is like sometimes. You’ll find people who you can relate to and share the same goals in life with. And you’ll find people who truly desire to love and serve Christ.

hey steve. also, i just want to add, that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing to go for walks by yourself sometimes, and to be alone with God. I’m sure there are lots of people who you COULD talk to when you go to uni if you ever need to, but from my experience (i’m in my second year now) sometimes the best thing is just to go away and be quiet and spend a bit of time with God, listening to him. after all, jesus got up early in the morning and went up a mountain to pray…
