The Three Stooges

I opened my eyes this morning just in time to see the door to my room crack open. I have been sleeping on a mattress on the floor in my brother’s room over Christmas break. When you have eleven or more people staying in the house, you kind of have to make due with whatever floor space you can find. Because my mattress was on the floor… it would make sense that my eye level was right around floor level too. I’m a genius, I know.

As I opened my eyes, the door cracked open, and I could see the feet of three little people crowding around the door trying to peek in. I looked up just in time to see Johnny (my 13 year old brother), Peter (my 9 year old brother), and Davy (my 7 year old brother) come crashing into the room with their duvets and pillows. I can’t blame them… I was on the floor. Needless to say, I was an easy target for the three stooges of my home and their duvets and pillows.

David, Peter, and Johnny

I half sat up in time to catch the blow of Davy’s little body jumping on my face and slamming me back down into the mattress and my double sized duvet. Johnny grabbed his duvet and pillow and quickly curled up at the end of the bed, while Peter and Davy wrestled me for the mattress. Quite obviously, I won the small tussle. I mean, I’m a college student, right? Wrong… it never ceases to amaze me the fight that my little brothers can put up. They’re small little people, but that doesn’t quite mean anything. I must have trained them well. :)

I picked Davy up, pulled him and his flailing arms off my face, and threw him into the pile of three or four duvets. As I turned around to claim my reconquered bed, my eyes met with the smiling face of my little brother Peter. He was quite happily snuggled up in his own blanket and laying on my pillow right in the center of the bed. I kind of laughed and tried to pick him up. He squirmed and tussled with me… I was busy trying to pull him out of my bed, while Davy and Johnny came to Peter’s rescue. And yes… the cause was lost.

We continued in our tussle for another ten minutes, when the realization hit me that I wasn’t going to succeed in battling the three little stooges. As fast as I threw one off and into the pile of pillows, another one would jump on my face …while the other conquered the much-desired bed and pile of warm duvets. So what did I do? I got smart…

“Hey boys! Let’s all go jump on Davy and Peter’s beds!” I said as I started to get up. Knowing Peter and Davy and their protective nature, they would immediately jump up and run into their own room across the hall to guard their territory. And yes… they did. :) I grabbed my double duvet and my pillow, and I ran into their room in time to get my legs tackled by Davy. We tussled again for a few minutes in a raging pile of pillows and duvets, until I quietly slipped out and back into my own bed.

You see… I may not be able to beat them in a battle of strength and agility, but I’m not as dumb as I look.. :) What can I say? I love my family, and my three little brothers are no exception.
