A beautiful day…
Written by Philip Codington on November 20th, 2006It’s a beautiful fall day on Lookout Mountain…despite the fact that it is yet another Monday here at Covenant College. The past few days have been a mix of sun, clouds, rain, and blue sky. We even had snow today for the first time this year! I was walking into the Tuck Shoppe on my way to lunch, and people just started shouting from across the chapel lawn. There was definitely the beginning of snow flurries across Covenant campus. Classes are finished for the day. I started out with a meeting with my English professor this morning around 8:00. I talked about my final English paper that I submitted to her last week. She explained to me how the final writing portfolio was going to work and what she expected to be included in it. After that, I went to breakfast in the Great Hall. It’s almost that time – Thanksgiving Break!
And as usual, the food in the cafeteria always seems to get better at the end and beginning of every break. I ate breakfast in my usual spot… a quiet corner in the Great Hall where I can just spend some time praying and enjoying the view of Lookout Mountain from the back windows. I talked some with friends, and then left to go to biology class in Mills Hall. I talked with Dr. Morris, my biology professor and advisor, earlier in the week, and I was looking forward to the new topics that we would be covering in class. As a biology major with a concentration in pre-physical therapy, anything and everything to do with the human body fascinates me. Dr. Morris lectured on the immune system and the various methods of defense that our body has against bacteria and viruses. Needless to say, as I’m sure all of you find this completely and utterly amazing (and no, there was no sarcasm there at all), it was a good lecture. After biology class, I headed up to Sanderson Hall for my Microcomputer Applications lecture. After my last morning class from 10:00 to 10:50, I headed up towards the chapel. My older sister Julie was going to be dropping in on her way to New Mexico for Thanksgiving break, so I was going to meet her for a few minutes. I ran into Betsy, my older sister who is currently a junior here at Covenant, and she was also on her way to see Julie. We raced up towards Carter Hall to find her, and then headed different directions around Carter to find her. I came running out of the Tuck Shoppe in Carter in time to see Bets running up to hug Julie. Good times… good memories.
After talking with Julie some, I headed towards the biology laboratory to finish off a lab with my lab partner. We’ve been splicing different strains of lambda phage bacteria and pUC18 bacteria and then exposing them to E. coli (don’t ask…). Again, needless to say, it has been an amazing series of labs.
After biology lab, I headed up to the Great Hall for lunch. Lunch at Covenant, on any average day of classes, has got to be one of the most fun and de-stressing time of the day for me. It just gives me the opportunity to take a break from classes and spend much needed time with friends.
